Comparing Insurance Costs for Your Impala to Other Vehicles

There are many reasons why costs are different from similar models like the Dodge Charger, Toyota Avalon, Nissan Maxima, and Chrysler 300. Chalk it up to safety/reliability records, recall history, cost of parts and labor, and hundreds of other variables insurers used to determine your risk profile.

Types of Car Coverage for Chevy Sedans

Once you’ve discussed your needs and budget, you can pick from a variety of different types of policies. In some cases, such as if you are financing, the lender will require you to carry full coverage, which offers the best protection. However, if you own, you can get away with the state minimum.

Freeway offers several options, including full coverage and state minimum liability.

Full Coverage

Full coverage insurance is a combination of coverages that includes bodily injury/death and property damage liability, plus comprehensive, and collision.

Collision pays for damages resulting from wreck, regardless of who is at fault. Comprehensive pays for vehicle repair or replacement due to things that mostly happen when you are not behind the wheel, like theft, vandalism, and falling tree limbs.

Add-on coverages are also available. These include rental reimbursement, uninsured motorist, medical payments (MedPay), and personal injury protection (PIP). Medical payments and PIP cover medical expenses incurred from a covered loss and most states offer one or the other, but not both.

State Minimum Liability

All states but two require you to carry at least minimum liability limits.

Minimum liability coverage consists of two types: bodily injury and property damage liability, covering the cost of medical expenses/lost wages and the repair and property of vehicles to third parties.

It is typically expressed as a three-number combination comprising bodily injury per person, bodily injury per accident, and property damage. Additionally, some states require uninsured motorist coverage and PIP.

For example, Texas drivers require 30/60/25 liability, translating to $30,000 for bodily injury (per person), $60,000 for bodily injury (per accident), and $25,000 in property damage liability per accident.

In turn, Louisiana drivers must carry 15/30/25 liability, or $15,000 for bodily injury (per person), $30,000 for bodily injury coverage (per accident), and $25,000 for property damage.

However, Kentucky requires 25/50/25, plus $10,000 PIP. Maine requires 50/100/25, plus 50/100 uninsured and $2,000 MedPay.

Opt for full policy over a state minimum required policy. With the average price of new vehicles hitting $48,301 (Kelley Blue Book), California’s $5,000 property damage minimum is woefully inadequate.

How Does a DUI Affect Insurance Rates for a Chevy Impala?

If you have been convicted of a DUI, expect your rates to increase drastically. Your premium increase depends on several factors, such as your blood alcohol content (BAC) level, and type of offense. For example, expect higher rate increases for higher BAC convictions or at-fault accidents leading to felony convictions.

Depending on the state, you may be required to file an SR-22. SR-22 is a certificate of financial responsibility, proving that you are carrying your state’s minimum required liability limits.

Outside of hiked rates, you should expect immediate license revocation or suspension, with reinstatement once you have paid off all fines, administrative fees, and taken required driving safety courses. Actions to take after DUI convictions depend on the state.

What Are Some Auto Insurance Discounts?

You may be eligible for all types of discounts, including policy, driver behavior, affiliation, and vehicle-based.

Policy decreases are offered to drivers who lower their risk of a payment default. These include:

Drivers are also rewarded for good driving. Eligible recipients:

  • Keep a clean driving record for the last 3-4 years, drive less than 7,500 miles per year, and enroll in usage-based (UBI programs). Companies use tracking devices or a mobile app installed to monitor your vehicle’s speed, total driving time, mileage, and other variables.

Remember to call your insurer every six months to see if you qualify for any new discounts. In addition, as your life circumstances change (e.g., switching to an older make and model vehicle), it doesn’t hurt to call.
