What Are the Penalties for Driving Without Insurance in Baton Rouge?

Obviously, it’s important to meet the minimum car insurance requirements before you drive through Baton Rouge. But do you know what the penalties are if you are caught driving without having any insurance?

Upon the first offense, police will suspend your registration, remove the license plates, and then impound your vehicle. You will get a Temporary Vehicle Use Authorization sticker allowing you to drive for three days. This gives you time to visit the Office of Motor Vehicles and present your insurance information.

Upon the second offense, the same things will happen. But now, you will need to pay a reinstatement fee of $160 as well as fines for vehicle storage and vehicle wreckage.

Upon the third offense, the same things happen, but the reinstatement fee jumps to $510. And if you are in a car accident and don’t have insurance, you likely cannot get compensation even if you were the victim and even if this is your first offense.

In fact, the only way to get compensation, in this case, is to pay out of pocket for damages: $25,000 for property damage and $15,000 for your personal injuries. After you meet that threshold, the remaining costs will be compensated by the other driver’s insurance if they were at fault.
