South Carolina does allow drivers to register as uninsured motorists by paying a $550 annual fee. This does not absolve them of financial responsibility if they are at fault in an accident, and they\u2019ll be required to pay out-of-pocket. For those driving without insurance who are <em>not<\/em> registered uninsured motorists, these are the penalties:<\/p>\n<h3>First Offense<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Must pay $550 Uninsured Motorist fee.<\/li>\n<li>$100-$200 fine or imprisonment.<\/li>\n<li>$5 per day for lapse in coverage.<\/li>\n<li>Suspension of license and registration.<\/li>\n<li>$200 reinstatement fee.<\/li>\n<li>SR-22 required.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Second Offense<\/h3>\n<p>Those who are caught a second time without insurance are subject to these penalties:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>$200 fine + $5 per day without insurance.<\/li>\n<li>$5 per day for a lapse in coverage.<\/li>\n<li>30 days imprisonment.<\/li>\n<li>Suspension of license and registration.<\/li>\n<li>$200 reinstatement fee.<\/li>\n<li>Must provide proof of insurance.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Third and All Subsequent Offenses<\/h3>\n<p>After the second offense, here are the penalties any time someone is caught driving without insurance:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>$5 per day without insurance.<\/li>\n<li>$5 per day of lapse in coverage.<\/li>\n<li>45 days to 6 months imprisonment.<\/li>\n<li>License and registration suspended.<\/li>\n<li>$200 reinstatement fee.<\/li>\n<li>Must provide proof of insurance.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Now that we\u2019ve discussed the required coverage, we\u2019ll look at some additional things you should know.
